  • 4 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup gluten free all-purpose flour with xanthan gum
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • 8x8 inch baking dish
  • mixing bowls
  • peeler
  • knife
  • measuring cups
  • fork

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated. Spread apples evenly in the prepared dish.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine gluten free flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.
  6. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Storage: Cover leftovers and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes. For a nutty twist, add ¼ cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble. This recipe is naturally oat-free and works with most gluten free flour blends.
